For the recent TV drama about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Helena Bonham-Carter reports that she consulted an astrologer to help her characterisation. As quoted in interviews, the astrology was a bit simplistic, paraphrased as “you’re air, she’s water”, which when you look at the element distribution of planets isn’t entirely accurate: ET has almost all planets in water and fire and HB-C has a very even distribution of elements. But even using the simple Gemini-Pisces difference could be useful to inform the acting of Taylor. (note: HB-C’s chart is based on Noon.) For those of you who weren’t around in the 1960’s and 1970’s it’s difficult to get across just what huge celebrities Taylor and her twice-husband Scorpio Richard Burton were, with their lives continually in the headlines.

July 2013 will see a grand trine - where three planets are each 120° apart in the sky - in this case Jupiter (Cancer), Saturn (Scorpio) and Neptune (Pisces). These three planets have not formed a grand trine relationship since the turn of the year 1749-50, again in water signs (1929 came close, though was disassociate). An internet search of ‘grand trine 2013’ will pull in some interesting comments, but it would seem to be a good time for blessing one’s dreams, especially if you have planets round about 5° of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. The trine will be within orb from the beginning of July until mid August and will be closest round about 16-19 July. Read Christina Rodenbeck's July 2013 post here. KL From May 23rd to the 27th there will be a triple conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and Mercury in the evening sky, around 20-22 degrees Gemini, with a beautiful triangle formed on May 26th. This will be a rare opportunity to spot elusive Mercury, normally hidden by its proximity to the Sun. Astrologically, such a conjunction bodes well for communication, business, talks and seminars, teaching, writing and networking. A great time for a party too! GB To see the conjunction requires a good view of the horizon (and lack of low cloud in the west). Venus will appear first and you should then be able to see the other two close by, from about 9:45 on. Binoculars will help.
Although Jupiter will cease to be visible at the end of May (becoming 'under the sunbeams') it will continue to be a good time to spot Mercury up to the middle of June. Just find Venus visibly bright and then look up about 45° to the left. The optimum date is round about 8th. June. Mercury, Venus and the Sun have appeared to overtake Jupiter very quickly - it's because of the perspective, Jupiter being so much farther away. Distances at beginning of June : Mercury 98m miles, Venus 151m miles, Jupiter 566m miles. Mercury is dimmer because it is a lot smaller, Venus especially bright because it is covered with pale clouds which coupled with its closeness to the Sun make it very reflective of light ("high albedo"). Jupiter can at times be almost as bright as Venus despite its distance, because it is so large. KL Annular solar eclipse, showing the 'ring of fire'. Early Friday morning there is a New Moon which is also an annular solar eclipse (total at approx 1:30am), at 19.31 Taurus, visible in Australia and the southern Pacific. Annular means that the Moon is too far from Earth to block out the Sun completely, so at totality it leaves a ring of the Sun's light (annulus) around it, sometimes known as 'the ring of fire'. Astrologically, eclipses can bring drama, intensity and passion, and if you have any planets within a degree or so of Taurus in particular (and possibly Scorpio), expect to be in the spotlight for some reason. Eclipses are often like a message, prompting - sometimes forcing - you to make important decisions about your life, or showing you a vision of the way forward. Check out the house of your birth chart that the eclipse falls in for additional clues. Eclipses also fall into Saros Series, which Bernadette Brady discusses in her book Predictive Astrology - The Eagle and The Lark (available to members in our library). According to Bernadette, this eclipse is part of the Saros 138 South15 series. Of this, she writes: “This series is about a release of tension. A situation which has been lingering will suddenly clear. In the clearing of the problem there is also a sense of grief or loss which is not so much personal as belonging to a group or collective.” This eclipse, along with the two lunar eclipses surrounding it (on April 25th and May 25th) takes place within the current Uranus-Pluto square, exact on May 20th. Here is the discovery chart for the Comet which is visiting us this year, with the comet shown at the end of Cancer. It will reach its closest point to the Sun on 28.Nov.13, info. provided by Jodey Collorick & Jill Shearer at their fascinating talk about comets. Very visible "great" comets may mark the beginning of new eras in some way, for example the great comet of 1680 was instrumental in establishing Newton's theory of gravity and the 1680's arguably marked the end of the religious Reformation and the establishment of the modern parliamentary system. Comet ISON appears to be orbitally related to the 1680 comet.
In the news on 25.3.13 for a uncomfortable interview and subject of a documentary on BBC 2. The multiple Gemini should be benefiting from transiting Jupiter, but also has transiting Saturn on his Scorpio Neptune, and transiting Neptune on his Pisces Saturn.
Thinking about the current unseasonably wintry weather the UK is experiencing reminds me of Bernard Eccles' workshop on astrological weather forecasting that he gave us a few years ago. In it he talked about how aspects between planets can reflect weather patterns. It also reminds me that currently we not only have a mutual reception between Pluto (extreme weather) in Capricorn and Saturn (cold) in Scorpio, but we also have had a sextile between these two planets for the last few months, making it something of a grim 'triple-whammy' between these two planets.
However, using a 1-degree separating orb, they should be out of aspect by the middle of next week. Let's hope so, especially as it gives way to a much balmier Mars (heat)-Jupiter (high pressure) sextile on Tuesday... Graham Boston The BBC is one many organisations and Countries (including the UK 1801) formed on 1st. January. Originally the BBC was a private company started on 18 October 1922, but its current form was established under a Royal Charter in 1927. All these 1st. January entities will have the Sun at about 9 or 10 degrees of Capricorn, so Pluto is already or soon will be transiting this point. Most of these organisations have a legal midnight formation time which also places the IC of the chart here, usually a degree or so earlier. The pattern seems therefore to be the foundations being rocked followed by turmoil, reorganisation and transformation. As this time and date every year also has a descendant round about 6 degrees of Aries - where Uranus currently is - the full impact of the ongoing Pluto-Uranus square will be emphasised in all 1st. January organisations.
KL Have the last eighteen months seen more scandals than usual - or more to the point have an exceptional number of scandals been brought to light ? July 11 News International phone hacking • Sept 2011 Swiss bank UBS announced that it had lost over 2 billion dollars, as a result of unauthorised trading performed by Kweku Adoboli • Nov 11 The results of over a hundred research papers published by Diederik Stapel denounced, headlined in New Scientist as “Case of Massive Scientific Fraud” • June 12 Ettore Gotti Tedeschi and corruption at the Vatican Bank • July 12 LIBOR interest-rate fixing • Sep 12 Hillsborough Stadium report • Oct 12 Lance Armstrong (Jupiter conjunct Neptune in Sagittarius - big deception - big charitable giving) and drugs in cycling • Oct 12 allegations against Jimmy Savile A characteristic of recent scandals is how they have not been contained - when a line seems to have been drawn, further revelations occur that draws more people and organisations into the affair. We tend to think of Neptune as obscuring in nature, but it can also remove boundaries, exposing what's been hidden. With Neptune in Pisces (since April 11) it may be that ultimately truth will out - though will the bottom of things every be reached ? Armstrong may forever deny cheating, Savile is dead. Add in the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square and this particularly impacts upon established organisations (Government, Banks, Police, BBC etc.).
