In the light of the tragic massacre yesterday in Norway, the horoscope of the country, set for the parliamantary declaration of secession from Denmark in June 1905, is reproduced below.

Announced today that the NOTW is to close following the continuing repercussions of its reporting techniques. The chart is for the first edition. Sun Venus (good for a new business venture); Mercury in Scorpio is good for investigative journalism, but its all but unaspected position means it's not connected to the rest of the chart. Transiting Neptune trine that Mercury may be bringing the truth to light. Saturn Moon Mars close in Capricorn may be a fascination with the darker side of life, but would you trust someone with a Jupiter-Neptune conjunction ? I guess it depends - good for a charity (especially in Aquarius) but a newspaper ? The current Pluto Saturn square is hitting the Sun/Venus square Mars - and with Pluto to make more transits of Mars along with transitting Uranus (see earlier posts) killing off the newspaper (BTW not every Pluto Mars transit means 'murder'!) is unlikely to end the unfolding story. Kris
I don't like most (new) 'Americanisms', but I can't think of a more fitting phrase than that this is a 'heads-up' re the current Uranus-Pluto square. Uranus having entered Aries in March this year, it was bound at some time to close in on Pluto - at least, by a 90 degree angle (otherwise known as a square aspect) - which is in early Capricorn. Uranus turns retrograde in early July, meaning that the square doesn't quite perfect, i.e., reach exactitude, until June next year, but it's within 2 degrees from June 20th to September 18th this year, and it's at its closest (within 1 degree and 1 minute) in early August, which is when astrologer Hans Baker will be coming along to talk about this astrological phenomenon, which is already having all sorts of repercussions in all sorts of ways, and will continue to do so over the next 5 years, during which time it perfects an extraordinary seven times. See Thursday 4th August, 8-10pm: 'Uranus Square Pluto: Revolutionary Imperative'. Graham On Saturday we went on our annual summer field trip, which is always held near the solstice. This year we went to the delightful home of William and Jane Morris, and their friend, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. William Morris, a multiple Aries, was the pioneer who initiated the 'back to nature' Arts & Crafts movement, a reaction against the Victorian primness and fussiness of the times, and, along with other artists, craftsmen, writers and socialists, headed to the Cotswolds to live a simpler, more authentic life. Kris brought along the birthcharts of the the Morrises and Rossetti, who were involved in a complicated Ménage a Trois. Their characters shone through their birthcharts, and the synastry between them was highly revealing. After lunch we also discussed how Venus in our own chart might reflect our own artistic preferences and creative style.
The house and garden were idyllic, as were the treasures inside. Well worth a visit. With thanks to Pamela for taking the photos below, including the contented-looking archetypally Taurean Bull! Graham The Euro is currently being put under severe strain by the Greek debt crisis. There is the possibility that Greece will revert to its former currency, the Drachma, but this might paradoxically weaken the Euro as speculators may suspect that the same fate will befall other struggling members of the Eurozone.
Given that the Euro is a currency, one might think that The Sun (which rules gold) is especially important in its 'birthchart', along with Venus, the traditional ruler of money. The Sun in this chart is (oddly) unaspected, whilst Venus squares Saturn - not exactly an indicator of easy wealth-creation. The chart ruler (i.e.. ruler of the Ascendant), Mercury, is in its detriment in Sagittarius, and (a double-whammy), square to Jupiter, perhaps suggesting the strongly ideological and over-reaching aspect of the currency, in that part of its raison d'etre was to bind countries together in an ever-closer financial and political union. Currently, transiting Saturn is making a square to The Euro's Sun, bringing problems and stress, although perhaps a greater test will be later this autumn, when Saturn opposes its natal position for the first time. Progressed Venus is also conjunct natal Uranus, perhaps bringing instability and the need to reformulate its internal and external relationships (or sever them entirely and move on). Graham I was wondering the other day what yesterday's Mars-Jupiter conjunction (in Aries, part of a large ongoing stellium in the sign) might bring, and thought of a military celebration or a victory parade, since Mars - at home in its own sign of Aries - rules war, battles and the military, whilst Jupiter rules celebration, justice and success, amongst other things. Aries can also be a triumphalist sign in which there are either winners or losers. So the death of Osama bin Laden seems like one of those headline-grabbing events that coincide neatly with the planetary line-up of the moment. Of course, the conjunction could also inflame or spread (Jupiter) anger (Mars), and so there are likely to be broader conserquences.
Just wish I'd posted something before it actually happened rather than after... Graham It isn't just the Pump Room with watery connections - Cheltenham has number of Neptune-related statues …
The Neptune fountain in the Promenade. The Wishing Fish Clock in Beechwood Arcade, designed by Kit Williams (Mercury opposite Neptune), painter and well-known as the author of Masquerade, a book with a thoroughly Neptunian history. Bust of Brian Jones, Beechwood Arcade (original member of the Rolling Stones, born in Cheltenham, Piscean, drug abuser, death by drowning in suspicious circumstances). The Holst Statue, Imperial Gardens (Composer, best-known for the The Planets Suite, Neptune plaque on the statue) Meditation sculpture in Imperial gardens, by Willi Soukop (Sun opposition Neptune). Click here for map and images of these and other public art in Cheltenham. KL A small group of us met at the Pittville Pump Room in Cheltenham this morning and toasted Neptune's change of sign with the Spa waters, and over tea and cake in the park, a lively discussion on Neptune in Pisces, and the position of the astrological model in our culture, ensued. Interesting that today there are Sun, Moon and four planets in Aries to welcome Neptune into Pisces. (Incidentally, predicting the future position of Neptune more than ten years ahead is still a challenge to mathematicians, so the exact moment of change could be wrong in your ephemeris, by hours or even several days).
I noticed in the news today 'AC Grayling has written a book which offers atheists a "bible" of their very own'. I wonder if this was released to coincide with his birthday (3.4.49) - surely no-one would be so superstitious ? He has Sun and three planets in Aries, plus, a nice one for a philosopher, a Sun-Neptune opposition within a degree of exactness, transiting Saturn exact on his Neptune today. In the way that us 'apophenic' astrologers seek connections where perhaps none exist, it struck me that the 'Ten Commandments' he suggests, which are probably better considered as 'humanist' than 'atheist', might correspond to the ten planetary archetypes of astrology. So for fun, here's his list with my suggestions : Love well (Venus), seek the good in all things (Jupiter), harm no others (Neptune), think for yourself (Uranus), take responsibility (Saturn), respect nature (Moon), do your utmost (Pluto), be informed (Mercury), be kind (Sun), be courageous (Mars). KL Friday's tragic events in Japan on Friday have bought devastation and grief on a huge scale. Our sympathies are with the injured and the families of the victims.
Although responsible astrologers do not claim to be able to foretell the future in detail, it would seem irresponsible not to try and find out whether there is a correlation between planetary activity and events here on Earth, despite what some British scientists say to the contrary. If such a correlation were found to be reliable, maybe lives could be saved. There are many different ways of doing so. An astrological chart cast for the moment of the quake (the earthquake struck at 5.46am on Friday March 11th) may be instructive, and is something we will add to this blog later. For now however, we will look at the 'birthcharts' of Japan itself and see whether there is any stand-out astrological activity in relation to them. Nick Campion's excellent Book of World Horoscopes lists 3 modern charts for Japan (it also mentions one for the accession of their first emperor, Jimmu, who acceded on 11-0-2-660 (BC) in Kyoto):
Aries, the first sign of the zodiac (and a fire sign), gives the quality of speed, force and energy to whatever planet is travelling through it. Squaring a country's Ascendant/Descendant/Moon could bring obvious (Asc/Desc axis) shocks and surprises that affect the people and the mood of the country (Moon). Paola Emma has written an excellent article on the disaster, which you can read at her website, Living Moon Astrology. Graham Jupiter is currently speeding through Aries since its abrupt entrance on Jan 22nd. A quick thought - Since Jupiter represents the principle of faith and expansion, and Aries is noted for its active and resolute nature, it seems entirely apt that we are seeing on the streets of Libya, Bahrain and other Middle East countries the courage to overcome fear and act decisively in the face of tyrannical power. Jupiter remains in Aries until June 5th.
