The 2nd and 8th Houses Discussion

In a change to our programme (due to our speaker on Nine Star Ki, Gabriella Burgess, being taken ill - and we wish her a speedy recovery), we are going to continue our series of discussions on the houses, after covering the 1st/7th house polarity back in September.
The houses represent a layer of chart interpretation additional to the planets and zodiac signs. In this facilitated discussion we will examine this important astrological building block by considering the polarity between the second house - said to be where our material resources and values are to be found - and the eighth house opposite. |
After introducing the concept of houses in general we will explore how planets in the second and eighth houses operate, as well as what the zodiac sign on the cusp or within the houses (and their ruling planets) tells us about that area of our lives.

Tonight we look at music and the heavens.
In this wide ranging exploration of music through the centuries Pamela Armstrong identifies those seminal moments when new traditions in musical style have emerged. Woven within the fabric of our musical history are periods of radical creativity which have lead to entirely new ways of composing and playing. By identifying these pivotal points in time Pamela is able to explore the dominant planetary configurations which underpin seismic shifts in musical form. In these times it is clear we need to find new maps to navigate our rapidly changing world. Making some sense of chaos would seem to be the new requirement. Astrology is a powerful tool for precisely this purpose.
Yet the art and science of chart interpretation occurs both within and outside the framework of current personal, collective and cultural understanding of what a human being is. Astrology is an effective tool for understanding patterns of character, behaviour and growth. Yet it also shows us that life, and potentially we as astrologers, are ever changing.
How may we arrive at deeply supportive astrological interpretations for clients within that ever-changing framework, that include our current understandings and yet reach beyond them?

An evening get-together with your astrological friends at the Royal Oak at Gretton, preceded by a circular walk by the River Isbourne at Winchcombe. We may be able to see Mars approaching its conjunction with Saturn later in the evening.

Electional Astrology is the forgotten branch of the art, yet also the one which gained the approval of the authorities in the Renaissance. It has been used to choose times for the foundations of cities and cathedrals, to start businesses, to get married, and more. It has its own set of rules, which are simple to apply once learned. This talk gives examples from both past and present, and encourages the audience to have a go themselves, with some practical exercises!

Field Trip to Wayland's Smithy and The Uffington White Horse

Our annual summer field trip is an opportunity to visit one of the many ancient or cultural sites that we are blessed with here in the south west of England, in the company of astrologers and friendly people with an interest in the subject.
All are welcome to join us, and you do not have to be a member or have attended any of our evening talks (or have an interest in astrology). This summer we will be visiting Wayland's Smithy and the Uffington White Horse in the Vale of the White Horse, south Oxfordshire, both within a couple of miles of each other and situated a few miles west of Swindon, about 50 minutes' drive from Cheltenham.
This is a free event, though you will need cash for parking and afternoon tea.
Wayland's Smithy is a long barrow and chambered tomb dating from around 3500 BCE located on the Ridgeway, a neolithic track linking Avebury to the river Thames. The White Horse is an animal figure carved into the chalk hillside, possibly first cut 3000 years ago. It is part of a complex including iron age earthworks, the artificially-flattened Dragon Hill and The Manger combe - this may have been a ritual site for which Dragon Hill was a viewing platform, but probably not as legend has it where the horse goes to graze when no-one is looking !
Please meet at 11.30am at the nearest parking area to Wayland's Smithy (see map and Google Street View), from where it is a about a 20 minute largely flat walk to our destination. It can be muddy and rutted though so wear suitable footwear. Please also bring a picnic lunch.
Please note there are no loos on either site during the day but the Teapot Tearoom (see below) have kindly agreed to allow us to use their facilities at any time of the day. There are also loos in Highworth and Farringdon which you may pass through on your journey.
After our picnic lunch at Wayland's Smithy we will drive to the car park for White Horse Hill, where we will take in the views and explore Uffington Castle, and ancient hill fort, and the Uffington White Horse.
Late afternoon we can adjourn for tea and cake at the nearby Teapot Tearoom at the foot of Uffington Hill. Please bring cash as they do not have a card facility.

Big Decisions ?
It’s supposedly easy to make a decision - just draw up the chart for the time of your question and interpret ! But usually important events are not chosen by a astrologers, as far as we know. Of course if different people asked the question "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" each question would have it’s own chart, with presumably a different answer !
So this discussion evening will use other astrological approaches, drawing on the charts of the EU and UK, other referenda and some of the key figures in the EU debate, to see what light astrology sheds on this possibly big decision.

In a change to our usual format the evening will start at 8pm with 15 minutes for refreshments (so that those who have attended the AGM may have a break), followed by an informal circle discussion on the subject of transits. The evening will conclude at an earlier time than usual, 9.30pm.

The officers of the society will give their annual report on its activities and finances, subscriptions and entry charges will be set and officers for the forthcoming year will be elected, through an online members-only vote.

Astrological Fate in The Plays of William Shakespeare
The notion of Fate, as well as the symbols and concepts of Renaissance Astrology, were embedded in the culture of Shakespeare's time. His plays give voice to many popular idioms that reveal an understanding of astrology quite different to that of the 20th and 21st Century astrologer.
Kris Lee will look at a possible birthchart for the playwright and discuss some well-known and often misrepresented astrological references in the canon. He will focus on the likely inaugural play at The Globe Theatre - Julius Caesar, where there is evidence that astrology was used to elect the date of its first performance - and on Romeo and Juliet, whose 'star-crossed lovers' epitomise an unavoidable astrological fate. This play may reflect a particularly unusual conjunction of planets that occurred in July 1594 : Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn in Leo, opposite Jupiter in Aquarius, a factor that may cast light on the uncertain date of the play's writing and early performances.

Welcome to 2016 and our annual astrological look backwards and forwards just after the turn of the year.
Uranus and Pluto have now finished their exact series of square aspects, but before this finally leaves us are still close enough to be in orb for January and February. What have we learnt from this period that began in early 2012 - and will things seem different once they are past ?
The great chronocrators Jupiter and Saturn will be in square aspect in the Spring and later in the year Saturn will be squaring Neptune. The end of the year sees a Jupiter-Uranus opposition, nicely mediated by a trine/sextile with Saturn.
Join us as we look back at the astrology of 2015 and look forward to how astrological events might play out globally and on an individual level in 2016.

We will look at the astrology of these individuals and more who seem to resonate with something beyond themselves. Often their darker side is ignored as we elevate them to something akin to mythical status.
The archetypal principles inherent in astrology can help us to understand the essential nature of these individuals and why so many respond to them.

Field Trip to Woodchester Mansion
This year for our Midsummer outing we will be visiting Nympsfield Long Barrow and then the atmospheric and curious Woodchester Mansion.
Woodchester Mansion is a 19th. Century Victorian Gothic Masterpiece mysteriously abandoned mid-construction in 1873. Hidden in a secluded valley south-west of Stroud, it is untouched by the modern world. This Grade 1 Listed Building has been saved from dereliction, but will never be completed.
We will walk through this extraordinary architectural exhibit in which the secrets of the medieval Gothic builders and masons are laid bare. The carvings in Woodchester Mansion are among the finest of their kind in the world. The Mansion has also been a persistent source of ghostly tales, including a floating head and an Irish woman who can be heard singing.
Meet at 12:30 at Coaley Peak viewpoint on the B4066 - bring a picnic. We will also view the the remains of the long barrow which has been here for 5000+ years.
Alternatively, be at the nearby Woodchester Park carpark by 1:45 in time to get the minibus to the house at 2 o'clock. You can also walk from the car park - it's about a 20 minute walk.
NB The entrance to Woodchester Mansion is off B4066 near Nympsfield - not at Woodchester Village.
The afternoon will finish at about 4:30, but there is the option to do a walk around the tranquil woodland of the park and/or walk back to the carpark.

In the past century we have seen an unrivalled move towards an astrology focussed on personality; a consequence of this has been a shifting in astrological symbolism to fit the humanistic view that every experience in life is in some way good for us. Concepts like 'Malefic' and 'Benefic' are often accused by modern practitioners as being outdated and overly simplistic but when we shift our attention away from personality and onto actual things and people in the world we find this categorising as serving its true purpose - showing us things that are good for the soul and things that are bad.

For those with a background in Western Astrology, learning Vedic/Hindu Astrological approach is easier than might first seem. The word Jyotish comes from Sanskrit Jyotisha, meaning ‘Light, heavenly body’, and has its roots dating more than 2000 years ago.
With a special emphasis on North Node-South Node (Rahu-Ketu) in Jyotish, the nodal axis is fundamental reason for the cycle of birth and death. We will also touch upon the Nakshatras, the Lunar Constellations, which underpins the entire Vedic Astrology and is as old as man’s obsession with studying the night sky!
Sonal Sachdeva is a film-maker, new media enthusiast and an astrologer who studied under Liz Greene at the CPA. Her films deal with social issues, the environment, and the ways people from different cultures live, think and feel. In 2010 she founded a group Circle of Divine Astrology, which holds events, discussions, talks and multimedia projects in London. The Circle of Divine Video project online has been first of its kind to document interviews with astrologers and practitioners of alternative healing arts from all around the world. A year to look forward to ?
… but we will start by looking back at the astrology of 2014, which was still dominated by the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square. 2015 will see the final exact alignment of this aspect, the only one with both planets direct and with Mars also involved. We will also have a fortunate Jupiter-Uranus trine, with Jupiter then moving from Leo to Virgo and responsible Saturn moving from Scorpio into fun-loving Sagittarius.

Pamela Armstrong is a student at the Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She is doing an MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology which includes the study of subjects ranging from Stellar Religions to Sacred Geography, Cosmology, Magic and Divination. Her dissertation is in Archaeoastronomy - in particular, research into the archaeoastronomic properties of Neolithic architecture. She lectures in the history of the media and is an astrologer.

Mandy Morrell will share a near death experience of her own but will also compare notes with that of Anita Moorjani whose wonderful book “Dying to be me” so well describes some common features of such phenomena. Field trip to Tewkesbury Abbey

This year our mid-Summer outing combines history, earth mysteries and dowsing.
In the morning, historian Tim Porter, who has talked to us a number of times, will give us a historical tour of Tewkesbury Abbey, which was started in 1102 and was saved from the dissolution of its monastery by being bought by the townspeople for £453.
Bring your own picnic - or visit one of the nearby cafés and pubs, which include the tea room at the Abbey which serves cakes and light lunches for charity.
In the afternoon, our own Kris Lee and Liz O’Sullivan, who has been dowsing since a child and has lived in Tewkesbury for nearly thirty years, will introduce to us the earth energies of the Abbey site. After a general introduction to earth energies, including looking at the differences between ley lines, alignments, landscape geometries and earth currents, they will share their research into how the Abbey fits into the wider sacred landscape. There will be an opportunity to observe or try out dowsing for some of the earth currents around Tewkesbury - or try your hand at dowsing for the site of some of the monastic buildings that Tim will have mentioned.
Weather permitting we may finish with an optional walk to the river.
Meet at the Abbey Porch for 11am. The Abbey is the big ecclesiastical building in Church Street.
Public transport : there are buses every quarter of an hour from Cheltenham and hourly from Gloucester.
Parking : Parking in Tewkesbury can be expensive. For Map and prices click here. The cheapest is £1 all day at the end of Station Road but this is 3/4 mile walk from the Abbey. Two steps forward, one step back : retrograde planets
There is comparatively little written about the astrological phenomenon of retrograde motion – periods when certain planets appear to move backwards in the sky. Many astrologers appear to ignore the subject altogether, and yet before our modern understanding of the heliocentric nature of the universe, this apparent departure from the normal scheme of things must have struck observers as extraordinary. Generally assumed by those astrologers who address the subject at all as a ‘weakening,’ negative or introspective influence, the phenomenon of retrograde motion has enjoyed a less-than-positive reputation over the years, but is such a reputation deserved?

On a previous visit to us, Annabel Hollis gave us an enlightening and perceptive talk on the wisdom and creative power of dreams. This time she will share a different aspect, her journey through the psychiatric system and out the other side into a process of reconnection, with her body, the earth, and her creativity. She was a founding member of the Spiritual Crisis Network and her talk will include information about this organisation, which recognises that what professionals label "mental illness" can often be a result of a spiritual awakening, something that can feel unmanageable in our largely secular and scientific culture and made worse if an individual resists spiritual connection. Older cultures often recognise that what we term mental imbalance may be shamanic, kundalini awakening or signs of connection to the spiritual.

Gong !
Sound Healing is the application of sound through the voice and other instruments to balance mind, body and spirit. It works by stimulating the body’s natural frequency of vibration and healing mechanisms. It goes back many centuries and both the voice and tuning forks have been used to heal. In recent years, gongs have started to be used for this purpose with surprising results.
Percussionist and experienced Sound Healer Phil McNamara will talk about the history and making of gongs, explaining how sound healing with gongs works, and after the break will provide a ‘gong bath’ where you are encouraged to close your eyes, relax and let the sound ‘wash’ over you.
The evening will feature several of the ‘Planet gongs' produced by the Paiste company with tunings based on Hans Cousto’s work The Cosmic Octave, each gong being 'tuned' to the frequencies of individual planets. You will also have the opportunity to play some of these exotic instruments.

Summer outing to The Purton Hulks
On 23rd. December 1909, a sudden giant landslip (Mars conjunct Saturn in Aries opposite Jupiter, square Uranus in Capricorn) demolished the land between the Severn and the Sharpness Canal. The solution was to deliberately run aground a number of old vessels to create a makeshift tidal erosion barrier. Barges, Trows and Schooners were "hulked" at high tide, and have since filled with silt. More boats have been added, including the schooner "Katherine Ellen" which was impounded in 1921 for running guns to the IRA, the Kennet Canal barge "Harriett", and Concrete Barges built in World War II. The Purton Hulks are therefore one of Gloucestershire's hidden treasures.
It's an atmospheric spot for a walk, and we are very pleased that we will be guided round the site by marine historian Paul Barnett THE expert on the Purton Hulks. At about 7:45pm we will adjourn to the Lammastide Inn for food and drink.

We will look at the history, methods and applications of various forms of numerology. We will work theory and practice, and you will have the opportunity to calculate your own numbers. It is a vast subject, but we will pack in as much as possible, according to Einstein’s maxim ‘Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts.’

In this talk Polly uses the planetary gods to show how the week carries within itself a wealth of significance as it ripples endlessly through our lives. She describes the historical origins and cultural diversity of the week and looks in detail at each day in the light of its ruling planet. This is followed by an exploration of how we can bring greater awareness of the weekday gods into our everyday lives. An early-evening walk with your astrological friends at the 2500-year-old earthworks at Uley Bury, near Stroud, with commanding views of the Severn Vale, followed by a visit to a local hostelry.
Park in Uley near the church; we will walk from here at 6pm. The walk begins with a steep climb, though you can park on the B4066 north of the village where access to the hilltop is relatively level (we should walk past there at about 6:30).
We will adjourn to the Old Crown at Uley for 7:30. It's OK just to turn up, but if you are definitely coming along, please let us know via 01451 822438 or [email protected] so we can give the pub an idea of numbers. Non-members welcome. There is no charge for this event.

Comets - divine messengers or flash in the pan ?
Historically known as ‘hairy stars,’ the sight of a great comet with its blazing tail searing across the night skies has struck fear and awe into men’s hearts since time immemorial. Frequently seen as harbingers of doom, omens of great terrors to come or presages of death and distruction, comets have ignited hysteria and panic – and even, on occasion, mass suicide. But how do they fit into our understanding of astrology? For such dramatic visitors to our skies, there is surprisingly little written about them from an astrological perspective. Jodey Collorick and Jill Shearer will look at the phenomenon of the comet and its place in our understanding of the heavens.

Saturnalia !
For our annual midwinter feast we will be returning to The Organic Farm Shop Cafe just outside Cirencester. For Sunday lunch there will be roast meat, vegetarian and vegan options. The food including the meat is almost entirely from the farm and completely organic. The cafe is licensed to serve alcohol so you can enjoy a glass of organic wine, cider or beer with your lunch and there is a large choice of hot drinks. There is the option of ambling off some calories afterwards on a woodland walk. The farm shop will also be open. Non-members welcome.

The cost will be about £20 for a substantial main course and delicious dessert - £18 if you choose vegan or vegetarian - drinks extra. You will need to pay us a deposit of £10 per person (non-refundable). Please bring cash to pay the balance on the day.

The Astrology of 2013
Our annual review of the year gone by and the upcoming astrological events. The theme of Uranus squaring Pluto, tempered by Neptune in its home sign of Pisces, will continue in 2013, with Saturn now in Scorpio through the year. Pluto and Uranus will especially impact on the many organisations and countries formed on 1st. January. February and March also sees a cluster of planets in Pisces.
