We are thrilled to welcome US astrologer Laura Nalbandian who will be sharing her insights into what retrograde planets really mean in our birth charts.

As with so many other areas in astrology – retrogrades have too many stereotypes. In this lecture, Laura examines the karmic implications of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in the natal chart.

Laura Nalbandian is one of the premier astrology teachers in Washington and an internationally popular conference speaker. She has been practicing and teaching since 1986 and is the owner/coordinator of NORWAC, the Northwest Astrological Conference, established in 1984.

Laura is an Evolutionary Astrologer,  having studied with the founder of the material, Jeffrey Green, from 1983-86. She has a thriving client practice where her focus is looking at the karmic/evolutionary issues in the chart and helping her clients to deal with and heal past life patterns.

with Special Guests!

"We’re still riding the great waves caused by the massive conjunction in Capricorn at the beginning of 2020, that was followed by the epochal conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius at the end of 2020.

How is that working out? And what next?

It’s time to take a step back, look at the horizon again and make a course correction or two."

Christina Rodenbeck will look at the current cosmic situation on a big scale, contextualising the historical trends and pointing one — or several - ways forward.

Christina writes about the stars, current affairs, art, and culture on her website The Oxford Astrologer as well as for several magazines. In addition to talking regularly at Aquarius Severn she gives lectures for the Oxford Astrology Group and the Astrological Lodge of London, hosts an astrology podcast with Sally Kirkman and has a thriving astrology practice.

The environment we create around us - our choice of home, its location, our furniture, our garden, balcony or yard, the spaces we create for different activities, all reflect aspects of ourselves and those of any other people we share our lives with - so we should in theory be able to recognise parts of our birth chart in our immediate surroundings.

Tonight we put that theory to the test, with presentations from volunteers who will share photographs of their homes and link them with their birth charts.

Think about your own home - does it reflect your birth chart (or perhaps you and your partner's birth charts)?

Here are some examples:

  • Is your Mars in Aries and you have a home gym?
  • Is your Venus in Libra and you cultivate decorative flowers?
  • Perhaps your Mercury is conjunct Saturn and you have a study that is off-limits to the rest of the family
  • Maybe your Moon is in Aquarius and you live in a tower!
  • You could have an emphasis on Earth Signs and grow your own food
  • Or you could be a fiery couple whose home is a statement of your personalities.

As usual, you must Register in advance for this webinar.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email from Zoom containing information about joining the meeting.

The Line of Good Fortune
with Maggie Hyde

Thank you for donating :-)

"Why do we do astrology? To predict our futures? To describe our characters? To gain self-knowledge? To tune in to the cosmic?  At heart, astrology is amazingly simple and allows us to delight in symbol, to enjoy its play and to reveal what matters in any situation.

This revelation begins with speculation on what a chart’s symbolism might mean. Such speculation forgoes any notion that the horoscope indicates objective truth or predetermined fate. Rather, it is katarchic, that is, it shows the initiative or action that will bring good fortune, change our narrative or be the best that can be achieved in the circumstances."

Using examples, Maggie will indicate how astrologers can find the line of good fortune in a horoscope.

We are very happy to welcome back astrologer, author and co-founder of The Company of Astrologers Maggie Hyde. Maggie has written several books including 'Jung and Astrology' and 'Introducing Astrology'. She was also Media Medium for the Guardian Online and writes for several women's magazines and online portals in the UK and Japan. She has also given readings at The Brit Awards.

Astrological Timecycles in History
With Palden Jenkins

Picture

Thank you for donating :-)
Picture
"This talk is not about events or event charts - it's about ongoing cycles that grind through history and shape it, in particular their pattern-setting crunch-points, the rise and fall of cultures and civilisations, historical megatrends and the underlying collective psychodynamics behind historical developments.

Palden will be looking especially at the mutual motions of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto and will go through the principles involved, illustrating it with a series of charts of crunch-points in time over the last two centuries since the French Revolution.

This is nothing less than something historians have a serious allergy to: a theory of world history!"

Palden Jenkins is a wide-ranging semi-retired astrologer, historian, geomancer, humanitarian activist, geopolitics buff and author, webmaster and broadcaster. He lives on an organic farm at the far end of Cornwall, nowadays attempting to survive cancer through a Neptune opposition Saturn transit! His cancer blog is at https://penwithbeyond.blog.

Thirty years ago he created
The Historical Ephemeris at www.palden.co.uk/ephem/ - a timeline of historical events and astrological motions. He's the author of multiple books including Living in Time (1987), Power Points in Time (2014), The Only Planet of Choice (1993), The Kingfisher Encyclopedia of World History (1999) and he has a new book emerging this year called Shining Land, about megalithic civilisation in West Cornwall.

Moon Signatures, Patterns & Cosmic Oracle
with Israel Ajose

Picture
Thank you for donating :-)
Picture
We are excited to welcome Israel Ajose, current President of the Astrological Lodge of London.

"The Moon is said to represent our emotions, security, mother and how receptive we are. While all the above is true, this powerful feminine luminary may have a lot more to say about our lives than that.

Moon signs, house placements, aspects, sect, condition and phases all point towards our physical circumstances, experiences and wellbeing in this physical world. The moon is actually the storehouse or hard drive of our life’s experiences, and the anchor which grounds us in this physical reality.

In this lecture we will be exploring how the Moon in our natal charts encompasses all of our life’s experiences and stories of past, present and future."

Israel Ajose D.Psych.Astrol. is a dedicated student, teacher and consultant in astrology and tarot, and is current President of the Astrological Lodge of London. He studied and completed full honours in psychological astrology at the Centre for Psychological Astrology in London with Liz Greene, and combines traditional, mediaeval, modern (psychological) and Vedic techniques and methods. His studies and practices also include cosmology, mythology, occult sciences, philosophy, Kabbalah, shamanism, and divination.

"On the day of your birth, Venus either rose before the sun, or set shortly after it.

Does being a morning or evening Venus person make a difference to your character? Will it show itself in your love life, or just in your love of chocolate?

And what if it was retrograde? This talk addresses all of these vital questions, and more."

Chiron and Pholus … and a Pandemic
Melanie Reinhart

Picture
Odilon Redon: Fight of the Centaurs (detail), 1910-
We are thrilled to welcome top astrologer Melanie Reinhart in March.

"We will consider the signification of the two Minor Planet/Centaurs Chiron and Pholus in the current pandemic situation. The association of Chiron with healing as well as the experience of illness, injury, pain or affliction on any level, is familiar to many astrologers.

Between 2015 and 2023, Chiron is squared by Pholus – exact a total of seven times! Discovered in 1992, the name ‘Chaos’ was originally proposed for Pholus. We will explore the dynamics of these squares, both referring to synchronous events which carry the ‘signature’ of Chiron-Pholus, and also look within ourselves to ‘pick up their trail’."

Melanie Reinhart B.A. D.F.Astrol.S. is a patron of the Faculty of Astrological Studies and a prize-winning holder of their Diploma (1979). She also trained in Horary with Geoffrey Cornelius (1990-91) and Deborah Houlding (2012). Astrology has been central to Melanie’s life since 1959, and she has been a professional astrologer since 1975: writing, offering consultations and teaching internationally. Since 1989, she has presented original material on new celestial objects, notably the Centaurs.

Her books are: ‘Chiron and the Healing Journey’, ‘Saturn, Chiron and the Centaurs’, and ‘Incarnation’. Melanie has a special interest in contemplative experience both as a healing process and also as a learning modality. Website: www.melaniereinhart.com.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Thursday 3 December 7.30pm
The Arc of the Infinite: The nature and function of the Planetary Nodes
With Mark Jones

Picture
Picture
In this talk, international astrologer, psychotherapist and transformational coach Mark Jones explores how the planetary nodes of Jupiter outwards reveal significant turning points in our collective evolution. Mark will share some choice research and insights from his upcoming book on the planetary nodes and show how they manifested in the lives of some extraordinary events and people who, in some way, contributed to the shaping of our modern world.

With the nodes of Jupiter in Capricorn we might expect to see how the collective evolution of religious and cultural ideologies are expressed through the structure of our civilisations. The nodes of Saturn and Pluto, also in Capricorn, say something about the need of the collective Soul to evolve through cleansing periods of adjustment which holds particular relevance today, where it can seem that our political and social apparatus are eroding beyond repair - can the astrology of the planetary nodes offer us a vision of new hope?

Mark Jones is an Astrologer, Psychosynthesis Therapist and Hypnotherapist based in South Wales and working with clients and students all over the world. Mark is a regular speaker and workshop leader in North America. Mark’s first book explains his approach; Healing the Soul: Pluto, Uranus and the Lunar Nodes. Mark’s second book The Soul Speaks: The Therapeutic Power of Astrology explores the transformative power of the natal chart reading. Mark’s latest book, on The Planetary Nodes, will be published in the winter of 2020. Mark’s website is www.plutoschool.com and he can be contacted at markjones@plutoschool.com.

Monday 21 December
Welcome to the Age of Air!

Picture
This solstice, join with others around the world not only to mark the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the first degree of Aquarius, but also to usher in the approximately 200-year period of the Air Mutation during which all such conjunctions will happen in air signs, and the transition from Earth to Air.

This is not an event in a particular location or online - you can mark it wherever you live, however you want, any time of the day, though if you want to do it at the moment of exactitude, the conjunction is closest at 7.22pm UK time. See what time this is in your location.

Some suggestions for honouring the air element:

  • Climb a hill or tall building and appreciate the view
  • fly a kite
  • make a wind sculpture
  • release rice-paper wishes or prayers into the wind
  • spend time observing the sky and clouds
  • light incense
  • do a breath meditation
  • dance like you're the wind
  • identify the planets and constellations in the night sky
  • meditate on how you would like to see the planet heal during the Age of Air

You are welcome to share your wishes for the Age of Air (or your photos of the activity you performed to mark the event) on the event's Facebook page.

Please pass this on - it's an opportunity to look beyond our current circumstances and raise our collective consciousness at this turning point of the year.

She is certified by the three major astrology organizations in the United States as well as the International Society for Astrological Research. Anne currently serves as a director for the C. We are delighted to welcome back top astrologer Darby Costello.

"Mercury is perhaps the most difficult to define of all the personal planets.  He has so many paradoxical attributes - Trickster, Guardian, Friend, Thief. He is also Psychopomp, able to travel between the underworld and the upper world.  And, as seventeenth-century astrologer William Lily said, he is 'good with the good, bad with the bad.'

So how do we read Mercury in our charts?  How do we understand his function, natally and by transit?  We shall look at this planet and try to catch how we might register his nature and work with his gifts, in order to honour this elusive and rich dimension in our lives. "

Darby Costello has lectured all over the world for many years and taught at the Centre for Psychological Astrology, the Faculty of Astrological Studies, the London School of Astrology and the webinar schools MISPA and the Astrology University.

Darby is the author of three books including
The Astrological Moon and is included in several anthologies.

Pictureself-portrait from wikiart.org
A look at the astrology of Vincent Van Gogh, Stanley Spencer and an artist of the Renaissance.

Wendy Fey will be making Some Astrological Observations on Some of Vincent Van Gogh's Self-Portraits. Wendy has an Art History degree from Essex University, 'from back in the mists of time'. Art remains a major interest in her life. She discovered astrology in the 1970s, and it has fascinated and impressed her ever since. Wendy worked in local government but is happily retired now. After moving to Gloucestershire in 2010 she was delighted to find such a thriving local astrology group as Aquarius Severn, and has been a member ever since.

Comittee member Kris Lee will be looking at the astrology and art of Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), a “small man with twinkling eyes” yet a giant of 20th. century art, produced in several styles - detailed landscapes, visceral portraits and neo-primitive works. He remained deeply attached to his birth place Cookham “a village in heaven”, where he set many of his religious works, such as Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta. He was also a war artist in both World Wars.

His wives and lovers were often subject-matter, his relationships with them idolatrous and complicated, including a honeymoon his second wife spent with her female lover while Spencer remained in Cookham, and an affair with a married woman in Leonard Stanley, referenced in his painting Village Gossips, now in the Wilson Gallery at Cheltenham.

Picture
Committee member Pamela Armstrong will be looking at the chart of a Renaissance artist which still holds lessons for us today as we live through this extraordinary year of 2020.

Pamela will be exploring 'the art of the possible and the likelihood of the probable'.

Jupiter and Saturn - The Great Chronocrators
Zoom webinar with the Aquarius Severn Committee

Picture
PictureMade by plotting the relative positions of the two planets, from Neil Michelsens's Tables of Planetary Phenomena
As Jupiter heads towards its conjunction with Saturn on the winter solstice, we explore what this will mean for the world as well as for us personally.

The conjunction takes place at 0° Aquarius and so marks a 20-year 'mini-age of Aquarius'. Is this the dawning of a more enlightened period in which the collaborative, humanitarian values of Aquarius take precedence over the failed materialism of the last twenty years?

A further consideration is that successive conjunctions occur in the same element, since 1842 in Earth - excepting the 1980 one in Libra when Aquarius Severn was formed - but now moving into air signs until well into the next century.

This suggests this conjunction is particularly significant in representing a historical shift

Let's Get Personal  - Sun to Mars
Zoom webinar with Margaret Koolman

Picture
Picture
The Sun's Sign in our charts can be seen as the door to our heart, the largest chakra, the Sun in the human solar system.  Margaret will look at some keys to this door, look for where we go when it's hard to be ourselves and how to balance our wonderful qualities so the world can digest them.

We may know our birth chart, but many people don't know their birth time or don't want all the astrology. They may just benefit from the odd phrase to help them live happily. Let's look for the phrases that will act as keys to mental understanding (Mercury), relationships (Venus), and the active energetic system (Mars). With very little astrology, everyone can use keys in their everyday life to detach and re-focus, because the chart is not who we are, it's what we have. Each key can be very simple, specific and above all useful, and finding your own can be fun!

So bring along your personal planets for a tour around this part of the astrological solar system!

Margaret Koolman has decades of experience as an astrologer working in the UK and overseas. She is the author of Soul Purpose Astrology and produces a monthly New Moon report available from her website soulastrology.com.

The Secret History of Saturn
Zoom webinar with US astrologer
Christopher Renstrom

Picture
Picture
Saturn has always occupied an uncomfortable position in astrology. By turns feared and loathed, it was the planet associated with the oppressed, slaves, the elderly and the destitute - far from its more recent association with rigid authority and the moneyed classes.

So how did this come about? Drawing on art, iconography and literature Christopher will reconstruct Saturn’s secret history and show a different way of looking at a planet that is often stigmatised.

In recent years Saturn has been held up as the shadow aspect of our horoscope, something we need to integrate in order to become whole. But what if Saturn’s job is to stubbornly resist assimilation?

We will see how by maintaining its otherness Saturn shows us our true faces.

Christopher will illustrate his ideas using the birthcharts of some infamous contemporary Americans.

Christopher Renstrom has been a practicing astrologer since 1985 and is  the author of Ruling Planets (HarperCollins) as well as the creator of RulingPlanets.com, an interactive astrology magazine. He writes the daily 'horoscopes' for the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate.com.

The Art of Interpretation - Finding Themes in the Horoscope
Zoom Webinar with Fernanda Paiva

Picture
Astrologer Fernanda Paiva
In order to learn how to read horoscopes we have to first consult many of the astrological ‘cookbooks’ and dissect each part of a chart, but how about the important process of bringing it all back together? How does that happen, and would there be a formula that could help us doing that more smoothly?

In this talk Fernanda Paiva will be exploring the art of interpreting charts, finding themes in the horoscope, and the role of imagination in this process.

She will be using examples from the audience, so the session won’t be recorded for that reason, but you may want to switch off your camera since any attendee with the right software can record the session and upload it onto YouTube.

With that said, Fernanda will only be talking about general themes in the horoscope rather than sensitive or private issues, and will be very respectful as ethics and empowerment are amongst the top priorities of her work as an astrologer.

Fernanda Paiva is a practicing astrologer with a B.A. in History and she acquired her astrology certificate with distinction at the London School of Astrology. She has been published by Flare UK, IAM Infinity magazine, the AA Journal and at the astrodienst website, and she is currently doing the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales.

Fernanda is originally from Brazil but has been living in the UK for the past 11 years and she will be doing a talk at the Astrological Association Conference in 2020 on The Astrology of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The feisty planet Mars enters its home sign of Aries on June 28th, straight after squaring the nodes of the Moon, indicators of our collective destiny. It will stay there beyond the end of 2020, appearing to travel backwards in the night sky between 10th September and 14th November before resuming its normal forward motion. Whilst in Aries, Mars will make a series of squares to Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto, re-energising the ongoing conjunctions between those outer planets.

Gillian will explore the nature of Mars and what Mars' transit through Aries might mean for the wider world. She will indicate specific times that could prove to be particularly tense, stressful or demanding. She will consider how any of us might respond to whatever challenges emerge and highlight where to look in one's natal chart for sensitive points which could be triggered by the transit.

Gillian Crawford has always been fascinated by the night sky; her curiosity about astrology started in her 20s and has become a deep fascination over the past four years. She joined Aquarius Severn two years ago.

This webinar will explore the role played by the fixed stars in the current lockdown.

We are honoured to be able to welcome Bernadette Brady, a shining light in the world of astrology.

Author of many books including the seminal work on astrological forecasting, 'Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and The Lark', 'Brady's Book of Fixed Stars' and 'Astrology, a Place in Chaos' as well as well as Starlight and Jigsaw software, she has been awarded the Charles Harvey Award for "exceptional service to astrology" and the Regulus Award in 'Theory and Understanding in Astrology'.

Although the webinar starts at 7.30pm you may join from 7.15pm and settle in or say hello to other attendees. After the Q&A finishes at around 8.35pm there will be a further quarter of an hour in which you are free to make contact with friends and acquaintances or just 'hang out' in the company of fellow astrology enthusiasts.

Clap For Carers

There will be a 5 minute break just before 8pm to enable UK attendees to join their neighbours (at a safe distance of course!) in expressing their gratitude to NHS staff, care and key workers.

In the last few decades, thanks to the boom in astrology, feminism and the counterculture in general, The Goddess, in all her forms, has been restored to her previous position of prominence.

At the same time, there has been a revision of the masculine deities. Jupiter, for example, is now all too frequently seen as a serial adulterer, and Mars as a would-be warrior who isn’t much good.

We now have asteroids for the roles of the mother, wife, sister and daughter - but what about the father, husband, brother and son? Perhaps it is time to restore the benefic side of the masculine ethos.

Past President of The Astrological Lodge in London, and holder of The Charles Harbey Award for services to astrology Bernard Eccles makes a welcome return to Aquarius Severn.

How Medieval Astrologers Knew What You Really Wanted!
Zoom Webinar with Chris Mitchell

Horary, one of the oldest branches of astrology, is used to answer direct questions such as 'where are my missing keys?' or 'will I get the job?'

Chris will explain some of the basics of this art as well as a little-known technique outlined in 'Intentions' - part of 12th-century astronomer-scholar Roger of Hereford's book 'Judicial Astrology', which enables the astrologer to uncover the real question behind the apparent one given by the client. In some respects this is similar to the modern practice of drawing up a 'consultation' chart cast for the moment the session with the client is due to begin, to find out the underlying issues likely to surface during it.

A downloadable handout will explain both how to answer questions using horary and how to divine the question behind the question, including interpreting the duodenaria (12th part or 2.5 degree segment) and novene (9th part) the Ascendant is located in.

Chris will answer some of the questions attendees submit using the chat facility, in the 10-minute Q&A session that starts at 8.35pm.

Be amongst the first to use this technique in over 800 years!

IDChris Mitchell is a graduate of the Astrologos Medieval Astrology course, has an MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology from Bath Spa University and a PhD (at Leicester University) on the introduction of astrology into England.

Chris is also a committee member of the UK Astrological Association and will be familiar to many of you from previous insightful and entertaining talks he has given at Aquarius Severn.

With thanks to the Astrological Association of Great Britain for giving us permission to play this recording.

Toby Aldren has been a professional astrologer since 1998 and has an astrology practice in Vancouver, Canada where he holds consultations, teaches classes and leads workshops. In 2013 he gained the Diploma from the Faculty Of Astrological Studies, with whom he now works as a Distance Learning Tutor and Online Tutor. He is also a professional musician.
